I’m feeling numb
Feeling numb is like your heart and mind hitting the pause button. It’s your body’s way of protecting you from overwhelming emotions or stress by shutting things down. While it can feel like a relief at first, numbness often leaves you feeling disconnected—from others, yourself, and even God.
What You Might Be Feeling Right Now
You might feel emotionally distant, unable to fully engage with what’s happening around you. It can feel like you’re moving through life on autopilot, where joy, sadness, or even pain just don’t seem to register. There may also be a quiet frustration or guilt for feeling this way, like you’ve lost part of yourself.
God’s Heart for You in Numbness
Psalm 34:18
"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
God is near, even in your numbness. He sees past the walls and understands the depths of what you’re carrying.
Ezekiel 36:26
"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh."
God promises to restore what feels hardened or lifeless, breathing new life into your heart and spirit.
Matthew 11:28
"Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
God invites you to bring your weariness to Him, offering His peace and restoration in exchange for the heaviness you’re carrying.
What You Can Do Right Now
- Give yourself permission to feel exactly what you’re feeling—or not feeling—without judgment.
- Spend time with God, even if it’s just sitting quietly in His presence. Ask Him to help you reconnect with your emotions and His peace.
- Reflect on what might be behind the numbness. Are there emotions or situations you’ve been avoiding? Naming them can help you begin to process.
- Engage in something grounding, like journaling, taking a walk, or focusing on small sensory experiences (like feeling the warmth of the sun or the texture of an object).
- If the numbness persists, consider talking to a counselor or trusted mentor who can help you explore what’s going on more deeply.
A Prayer for This Moment
"Lord, I feel so numb and disconnected right now. It’s hard to even know what I’m feeling or how to move forward. Please meet me in this place and help me reconnect—with You, with myself, and with the world around me. Thank You for understanding my heart, even when I can’t fully express it. Breathe life into my spirit again. Amen."
