ℹ️ The PQRST Method Overview

The PQRST Method is an inductive, Bible study method, developed by Dr. Sharla Walker of Rx For Purpose. You can learn more about the RENEW Framework and the development of the Bible Study Method with any of the resources provided below.

(P)araphrase

Paraphrase the scripture. Your ability to paraphrase it will help demonstrate the level of understanding that you have of the text. This should be directly correlated with your time reading and engaging with the text.

  • What is the central message of this verse or passage?
  • How does this passage relate to the broader chapter or book it is in?
  • What emotions or feelings does this passage evoke when you reword it?
  • How would you explain this verse to someone unfamiliar with the Bible?
  • What is the significance of the key words or phrases in this passage?

(Q)uestions

Write down any questions that come to mind about the text. This will guide your investigation of the supportive texts, resources, and prayer.

  • What do I not understand about this passage?
  • What cultural or historical context might I need to explore further?
  • Why did the author choose to include this particular message or instruction?
  • How does this passage challenge my current beliefs or behaviors?
  • What does this passage suggest about God's character or intentions?

(R)evelation

Write down the revelations that you receive from your studies. Summarize what you have learned about the text itself and how your understanding has grown.

  • What new understanding or insight have I gained from this passage?
  • How does this passage speak to my current life situation?
  • What does this scripture reveal about God’s promises or warnings?
  • Is there a conviction or encouragement I sense from this passage?
  • How is this passage prompting me to think or act differently?

(S)upportive Text

Write down scripture references that accurately support the conclusions that you came to in your revelation scripture. Remember that God’s word does not contradict itself. If you are having a hard time supporting your revelation with other scriptures, it is a sign to continue studying and asking God to reveal what you may be missing.

  • What other verses or stories in the Bible echo the themes in this passage?
  • How do the supportive texts enhance or clarify my understanding of this passage?
  • Are there any contradictions or tensions between this passage and others? How do I reconcile them?
  • What broader biblical principles can be drawn from the supportive texts?
  • How does this passage fit within the larger narrative of the Bible (e.g., creation, fall, redemption, restoration)?

(T)ransformative Truth

This is where you make it personal. Write out something that you are going to ‘walk out’ based on your study time and the revelation that you received.

  • What specific action can I take in response to this passage?
  • How can this passage shape my interactions with others this week?
  • In what ways does this truth challenge me to grow spiritually?
  • How does this passage call me to trust God more deeply?
  • What habits or patterns in my life need to change based on this truth?
